Guard screen impact
A steel guard screen is tested for impact resistance from a 3 T falling mass at 4 m/s (dropped from 0.8 m). Contact elements allow the mass to contact and bounce off the screen. A nonlinear material stress vs strain curve is applied to allow the bars of the screen to yield. |
The screen yields and deflects due to the falling mass. Residual displacement and stress from the impact can be observed. Approximately 40 mm of residual deformation is observed for this impact. Peak displacement during impact is about 130 mm. Multiple impacts can be considered. |
|
Residual stress is shown in the beams after the mass has bounced off the screen. This is due to the outer fibres yielding more than those at the neutral axis. |
