ST7-1.40.40.8 Extensional Behaviour of Pressurised Curved Pipes
Curved pipes with non-circular cross-sections tend to straighten when pressurised, as the cross-sectional profile tries to stretch into a circle. Curved pipes with a perfectly circular cross-section do not experience this phenomenon. However, curved pipes are often developed by a rolling-forming operation which leaves the cross-section slightly non-circular. This in turn can lead to extensional effects in formed piping.
